Escalating Tensions Between Iran and the US
Iranian officials issued stern warnings early Wednesday, stating that any involvement of US troops in the ongoing conflict with Israel could lead to “all-out war.”
“American intervention will only escalate tensions into widespread conflict in the region,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghhai during an interview with Al Jazeera English.
This warning comes at a time when it seems the Trump administration is gearing up to support Israel in its confrontations with Iran. Recently, President Trump hasn’t dismissed the idea, while also pressuring Tehran to relinquish its nuclear ambitions.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has also called for the deployment of “additional capabilities” to the Middle East, amid rising tensions.
On Monday, Israeli officials asserted their “air superiority” over Iran’s capital. Trump amplified his sentiments in a post online on Tuesday.
“We now have complete control over Iran’s skies. Iran had some decent sky trackers and defensive systems, but they don’t compare to the American-made ones,” Trump wrote.
“No one does it better than America,” he added, referring to the US assistance given to Israel in intercepting missiles originating from Tehran.
A Washington-based human rights organization reported that the Trump administration has cautioned against targeting Iranian forces or assets, especially considering that at least 585 individuals have been killed and 1,326 injured during the last five days of conflict.
“President Trump and the administration have taken all necessary precautions to safeguard our troops and maintain close ties with local partners. Let’s be clear: Iran should not threaten our interests or personnel,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated last week after Israel’s surprising strike on Iranian nuclear and missile sites.
This assault provoked retaliation from Iran, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking leaders and nuclear scientists.
On Saturday, Iranian officials declared that, as reported by state-owned media, they would target US, UK, and France-owned vessels in the Black Sea if their allies become involved in the conflict.
Leaders also indicated that Trump “will continue enriching uranium as part of a peaceful nuclear program.” There were calls to end not only the ceasefire but also the aggressive actions against Tehran.
Iran is poised to withdraw from its latest discussions with the US regarding its nuclear program and is gearing up for more military operations as the crisis unfolds.
“The operations conducted thus far have solely aimed at warning and deterring,” said General Abdul Rahim Musavi, the Iranian army’s chief, as reported by the Associated Press. “The retaliation will occur soon.”
