Most MAGA voters back US military action against Iran: survey

A significant number of self-identified “MAGA Republicans” are backing strikes against Iran’s military bases and other facilities as Israel intensifies its military actions. A recent poll by JL Partners indicates that 65% of these MAGA supporters favor such strikes, in stark contrast to only 19% of traditional Republicans who showed similar support.

While traditional Republicans have thrown their weight behind strikes against Iran by a margin of 51% to 28%, a broader group of Republican voters support these military actions by 58% to 25%, with 17% feeling neutral or uncertain about the issue. This information points to a clear stance among the GOP base, which is not inclined towards isolationism. They perceive the struggle involving Israel as linked to American interests.

Interestingly, President Trump’s approval ratings amid the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict show that 95% of his 2024 supporters approve of his overall performance, with 84% backing his management of the Israeli-Iranian situation. However, a general survey of Americans reveals mixed feelings, with 46% approving of Trump’s handling of past conflicts while 40% disapprove.

The poll results emerge amid growing divisions among key figures in the MAGA movement regarding Israel’s recent preemptive strikes against Iran, aimed at thwarting Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Notable right-wing commentators like Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, and Marjorie Taylor Greene have cautioned against escalating US involvement in what they see as a volatile situation.

Although Trump has expressed support for Israel and its actions against Iran, he has not yet authorized any offensive strikes. His critics, including Carlson, have labeled him as inconsistent on these foreign policy choices. Interestingly, Bannon has predicted that if the majority of the MAGA base pushes for an attack on Iran, Trump is likely to align himself with that sentiment.

Amid this backdrop, Trump responded cryptically to questions about his plans, stating that no one truly knows his intentions. The JL Partners poll also highlights that GOP voters and MAGA supporters are very distrustful of Iran, strongly supporting Israel’s military initiatives. A substantial 60% of Trump supporters, 63% of Republicans, and 67% of MAGA Republicans believe that Israel’s conflict is aligned with American interests.

When asked about Israel’s proactive measures, an impressive 81% of MAGA Republicans expressed support, while 59% of them and 52% of Republicans believed the military action should escalate until Iran’s nuclear program is dismantled. Yet, many analysts contend that Israel might not be able to truly eliminate Iran’s nuclear capabilities, especially given that facilities like the Fordow fuel enrichment plant are heavily fortified.

Military experts assert that destroying such a facility would require advanced weaponry, including heavy bunker-buster bombs, though there’s uncertainty about whether any available munitions could achieve the desired outcomes.

In a broader context, the polls also reveal that 73% of Americans believe Iran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear capabilities.

The JL Partners survey was carried out from June 16-17, sampling 1,039 registered voters, including an over-sample of 624 Republicans. The margin of error stands at plus or minus 3 percentage points for the national sample and 3.9 percentage points for the Republican sample.
