Pope Leo XIV Warns on Artificial Intelligence Threats
Pope Leo XIV has raised an urgent alarm concerning artificial intelligence, indicating it poses a significant risk to humanity that necessitates immediate global response and stringent regulations on major technologies.
“Currently, the Church aims to provide social education that aligns with innovations stemming from a new industrial revolution, where artificial intelligence presents challenges to human dignity, fairness, and employment,” Leo shared during a notable speech in the Vatican Cardinal Room.
His remarks were made during a formal audience with Cardinals at the Vatican Synod Hall on May 10th, drawing attention to the potential dangers involved. Reportedly, leaders from significant tech companies like IBM, Cohere, Anthropic, and Palantir gathered this week at the Vatican for a summit focused on AI ethics.
While Leo plans to release a written message, he has yet to engage in a direct conversation with any tech CEOs.
Later this month, Microsoft President Brad Smith is scheduled to meet with Vatican officials, and discussions about a potential meeting between Google and the Pope are ongoing.
Projections suggest that by 2040, artificial intelligence could automate or significantly alter various job sectors, with estimates indicating that 50% to 60% of global employment might be impacted by 2050, and some reports cite potential disruptions of up to 80% in certain fields.
According to predictions, around 30% of work could be automated by 2030, according to McKinsey, while Goldman Sachs estimates that 300 million jobs worldwide—approximately 25% of the global workforce—could face repercussions.
Still, roles in industries like construction and maintenance are anticipated to retain more stability amidst these changes.
Just days after ascending to the papacy, the first American Pope, Leo XIV, emphasized that artificial intelligence would be central to his priorities.
By choosing the name Leo, harking back to Pope Leo XIII, known as the “pope of workers” from the 19th century, he strengthens the connection between the tumultuous industrial age and today’s digital challenges.
Pope 267 aims to provide a moral counterbalance to high-tech corporations, which have increasingly sought interaction with the Vatican.
Both Pope Francis and Pope Leo advocate for legally binding global rules to mitigate uncontrolled AI development.
“Leo XIV hopes the spheres of science and politics will tackle this issue promptly, avoiding unwarranted advancements in scientific progress,” he stated.
Pope Francis has previously cautioned about the threats posed by emerging technologies, linking them to a potential “technical dictatorship” while describing AI as both “alluring and frightening.”
In 2020, a “Rome’s Call for AI Ethics” was introduced by the Vatican with support from companies like Microsoft and IBM, urging developers to create AI systems that prioritize privacy, human rights, and non-discrimination. However, some tech giants, including Google and OpenAI, have yet to endorse this initiative.
After a 2023 incident where an AI-generated image of him in a pufferfish jacket went viral, showcasing how AI can distort reality, Francis became more vocal in his concerns. He has admonished world leaders against allowing “machine choices” to supersede human judgment.
Now with a deeper comprehension of mathematics and technology than many previous Pontiffs, Pope Leo is expected to advance the church’s advocacy on these issues. Vatican officials view their moral guidance as crucial in confronting what they perceive as potentially dehumanizing forces.
“These tools shouldn’t be vilified, but they certainly require regulation,” remarked Cardinal Versaldi.
“The pressing question is, who will oversee this regulation? Relying solely on manufacturers isn’t dependable; we need significant authority in place.”
