California Wildfires and Political Tensions
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed criticism towards President Donald Trump on Wednesday regarding the ongoing wildfires in the state. He claimed that National Guard troops were diverted from firefighting efforts to address civil unrest instead.
Simultaneously, Newsom is pursuing $40 billion in federal aid as part of the upcoming Congressional Expenditure Bill.
Currently, evacuations have been ordered in areas near Sacramento and San Diego due to the wildfires.
A statement from Newsom’s office noted that the president’s actions have limited vital resources for firefighting. Specifically, the federalization of some California National Guard members has left a gap in resources needed to combat the flames.
As multiple blazes rage across the state, Calfire teams have had to step in during the Monte Fire in San Diego because California’s national troops were otherwise deployed. A team known as Joint Task Force Rattlesnake, consisting of over 300 California National Guard members, has been tasked with fighting fires, although many members have been assigned elsewhere, limiting their effectiveness.
What Newsom’s office describes as “illegal” actions may soon receive legal backing from the 9th Circuit. Recent reports indicated that a panel of judges, including one appointed by President Joe Biden, challenged Newsom’s argument regarding Trump’s justification for redirecting 4,000 National Guard members to protect federal facilities and enforce immigration laws.
Interestingly, Newsom has not condemned the individuals who attacked ICE officers and local police during riots. He also avoided acknowledging that clearing brush in forested areas has been a longstanding issue under his administration.
Earlier this year, in response to the devastating LA wildfires, Newsom allocated $50 million to address future legal battles against federal interventions. California is currently facing a budget shortfall estimated between $10 billion and $20 billion.
The wildfires coincided with President Biden’s visit to the LA area. Reports suggest that Biden’s administration has limited police presence during evacuation efforts, drawing scrutiny.
Donald Trump’s reluctance to approve the requested $40 billion was noted, as he commented that animosity has no place in political dealings.
