Escalation in Israel-Iran Tensions
On June 19, 2025, the Israeli Defense Minister accused Iran of committing a serious war crime after missiles from Iran struck Israeli hospitals. This attack caused significant damage to the Soroka Medical Centre, Israel’s largest hospital in the southern Negev region, leading to 71 people sustaining minor injuries.
In addition to the assault on Soroka, multiple residential buildings were also affected by the missile strikes, resulting in a total of 271 injuries reported on that day.
“This morning, the Iranian terrorist regime fired missiles at the Soroka hospital in Beersheba and hit civilians in our heartland,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He vowed that Tehran would face severe consequences for its actions.
“We targeted nuclear and missile facilities accurately, while they attacked hospitals—places where people are unable to escape,” he stated. He emphasized the moral difference between democratic nations that strive to save innocent lives and those intent on destruction.
According to officials, Israel plans to escalate its military responses by directing the Israeli Defense Forces to intensify strikes on Iranian strategic sites and government targets, aiming to eliminate threats to Israel and undermine the regime.
“These are grave war crimes. Ayatollah Khamenei will be held accountable for these actions,” the Israeli Defense Minister added.
Professor Ashar Basiri, who heads the maternity ward at Soroka, discussed the aftermath of the attack, describing the damage: “The top of the building was cracking, and flames were visible in the initial hours. Everything seems to be in ruins.” He expressed gratitude that the situation wasn’t worse, remarking, “We’re lucky to be alive, but the uncertainty looms over us.”
Iranian state media claimed the missiles targeted a military command center near Soroka, asserting that the hospital experienced blast waves without significant damage.
News of the hospital attack adds to ongoing airstrikes exchanged between Israel and Iran, with implications that a decisive strike could dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Netanyahu previously mentioned, in an interview, that a shift in government could be a potential outcome of Israeli military actions, subtly encouraging the Iranian populace to challenge their regime.
