XRP ETF from $1.4 Trillion Firm Delayed by SEC, Major Spanish Bank Supports Bitcoin, Coinbase Introduces New Ethereum-Based Crypto Listings: Crypto News Summary

U.Today shares the latest three news stories from the past day.

SEC Delays Decision on $1.4 Trillion XRP ETF Filing

The SEC has decided to postpone its ruling on the Franklin Templeton Spot XRP ETF. Initially, it was anticipated that an announcement would be made on May 3rd. However, now the deadline has been extended to June 17th. The SEC has moved its review period to late July and is seeking public comments prior to reaching a final decision. While such delays can be frustrating, they shouldn’t necessarily be interpreted as a sign of disapproval; they are a part of the thorough review process. Franklin Templeton, which filed its S-1 form in early March, is among the largest firms pursuing a Spot XRP ETF, competing with other notable entrants like Bitwise and 21Shares. Many analysts expect that the SEC may approve some spot-based altcoin ETFs by the second half of 2025, with a number of optimists hopeful for the XRP ETF’s approval.

Major Spanish Banks Promote Bitcoin Investment

Recently reported by Reuters, leading Spanish bank BBVA is advising wealthy clients to consider investing in Bitcoin and Ethereum. They suggest allocating around 3% to 7% of their portfolios into cryptocurrencies, depending on individual risk tolerance. Philippe Meyer, who heads BBVA Switzerland’s Digital & Blockchain Solutions, mentioned that the bank began offering Bitcoin advice in September of last year. This stance could be transformative in the crypto landscape since it’s one of the first major banks endorsing cryptocurrency investments. BBVA, along with Santander, manages approximately $700 billion in assets and serves nearly 80 million customers globally. Interestingly, about 95% of EU banks have yet to engage with cryptocurrencies.

Coinbase Introduces New Ethereum-Based Crypto Assets

According to recent updates from Coinbase’s X account, the exchange has added new Ethereum-based tokens, including one called Spark (SPK). These tokens are now categorized as “experimental” on Coinbase’s platform as well as its iOS and Android apps. Coinbase will also support Spark Perpetual Futures through its international exchange and Coinbase Advanced. The SPK-PERP market officially launched on June 19, 2025. Moreover, this month saw the addition of other Ethereum-based tokens like Pancakeswap, Lagrange (LA), and Ecena (ENA). Users can engage with Ethena (ENA) on Coinbase and the respective mobile apps for buying, selling, converting, sending, receiving, or storing crypto assets.
