Memphis mayor faced kidnapping attempt after claiming crime has fallen

Arrest Made After Mayor’s Crime Decline Announcement

Just a day after Memphis Mayor Paul Young highlighted a drop in crime rates within the city, a man was arrested for allegedly stalking and attempting to lure him. Trenton Abston, 25, was apprehended on Wednesday. He’s facing charges that include attempting to entice minors, stalking, and trespassing.

Memphis Police reported that security camera footage, both public and private, captured Abston moving through the mayor’s neighborhood and even approaching Young’s residence. When arrested, he was found in possession of tasers, gloves, rope, and duct tape in his vehicle.

The swift action by police, aided by the surveillance footage, led to Abston’s quick detention. The Memphis Police Department reassured the community of their dedication to ensuring safety for all residents, including elected officials. They stressed that any potential threats would be treated seriously.

As of Friday, jail records indicated that Abston was still in custody, with no bond set yet. It’s unclear if he has legal representation, as he couldn’t be reached for comments from the public defender’s office.

This incident comes on the heels of a conversation involving Young and sports analyst Stephen A. Smith regarding safety in Memphis. Smith mentioned that even prominent players in the NBA, like Jimmy Butler, have expressed concerns about safety in the city.

Young defended Memphis, highlighting its vibrant sports culture and noting the significant crime reduction in 2024 and 2025. He argued that changes are underway, pointing to visible improvements in the city’s safety and community welfare.

He also extended thanks to both the citizens of Memphis and Morant for addressing these issues and invited Smith to visit the city. Young’s office and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office did not respond immediately to inquiries.

Meanwhile, the police stated that the security footage related to the incident cannot be released at this time.
