JJ Spaun, born and raised in the suburbs of San Dimas near Los Angeles, emerged as an unexpected champion at the US Open Golf Tournament. At 34 years old, he had only experienced one previous win on the PGA Tour, making his victory in this highly prestigious tournament particularly surprising.

At 3 AM, he ventured out to find medication for her, despite the stress of the tournament. Renting a car, he drove from the suburbs to downtown Pittsburgh, where he found an open CVS. On Father’s Day morning—just before what would become the biggest day of his career—he prioritized his child’s well-being over his own sleep and preparation.
After winning the tournament, Spaun reflected on his chaotic night, noting it might have impacted his shaky start. “I’m not blaming it on my start,” he commented, “but it fits the mix-chaos type of what’s going on.” Clearly, the sleepless night weighed on him, perhaps contributing to his initial difficulties.
Los Angeles, plagued by crises ranging from the Covid-19 lockdown to protests, wildfires, and soaring homelessness, is in desperate need of heroes. While the city often elevates celebrities, the real heroes can sometimes go unnoticed. Spaun’s story reminds us of the value in familial devotion over any superficial “privilege.” On this Father’s Day, he demonstrated that commitment to his family trumps individual ambition, and ultimately, it seems, he was rewarded not just with a coveted trophy but with the relief of knowing his daughter was okay.
