Criticism from Congress Members on Trump’s Actions Against Iran
Members of Congress, particularly those known as the “squad,” voiced strong criticism of President Donald Trump after he approved missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities late Saturday.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib from Michigan reacted on Twitter multiple times regarding the attack. She highlighted that it was a blatant violation of the Constitution to send U.S. troops into action without Congressional approval, expressing that most Americans are weary of endless wars.
“Instead of heeding the concerns of the American people, Trump listens to leaders like Netanyahu, who have a history of misleading about Iraq and now Iran,” Tlaib remarked. “Congress needs to reclaim its war powers to put a stop to this unconstitutional military engagement,” she added.
Other squad members echoed Tlaib’s sentiments. Rep. Delia Ramirez from Illinois reiterated her worries about “perpetual wars,” emphasizing that the populace suffers due to the reckless actions of authoritarian leaders. She asserted that only Congress possesses the authority to declare war and that they must act to ensure safety and humanity.
Rep. Greg Casar from Texas, who is part of the progressive Congressional contingent, labeled Trump’s actions as illegal. He called for immediate legislative measures to prevent any unconstitutional war from taking place.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also from New York, condemned Trump’s decision as disastrous, insisting that it amounted to a significant overstep of Congressional war powers.
Omar linked the already tense situation between Israel and Iran to the reckless escalation of conflict ignited by Trump’s actions. She cited that once Congress reconvenes, they should urgently vote on a resolution regarding war powers, considering the inherent risks involved.
Rep. Summer Lee from Pennsylvania described the bombings as a dangerous escalation that could place millions in jeopardy. She characterized it as illegal and a substantial risk to peace.
Later in the day, Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma countered the squad’s claims, arguing that the War Powers Act pertained to troop deployment rather than Trump’s actions. He defended the president, stating that he aims to keep Americans safe when faced with threats.
