On Monday, MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough expressed support for President Trump’s recent military action against Iran, suggesting that both Trump and Hillary Clinton felt compelled to take such steps.
Over the weekend, Trump announced that the United States had launched bunker buster bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles targeting three key Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. He referred to the operation as an “epic military success.”
Scarborough, host of “Morning Joe,” stated he wasn’t fully endorsing either side but maintained that many former presidents and Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton, likely would have made a similar choice in the Oval Office.
He mentioned, “Bush 41, Bush 43, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton… it’s difficult to think that any president wouldn’t feel pressured to take that action.” He posed a rhetorical question about the consequences of inaction, pondering what Monday might have looked like if Iran were still approaching 60% uranium enrichment and closer to developing nuclear weapons.
Scarborough invoked Henry Kissinger’s thoughts on foreign policy decision-making, suggesting that such decisions often involve choosing between two tough paths. He noted that Trump is navigating this complex reality.
Though Scarborough has been critical of the Trump administration, he faced backlash when he and his co-host, Mika Brzezinski, visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate last year.
Washington Post columnist David Ignatius echoed Scarborough’s views, agreeing that Trump’s choices were anything but straightforward. He pointed out that Trump inherited a combative strategy from three predecessors, who had also considered similar bombings but refrained due to uncertainty surrounding the implications.
Ignatius concluded by noting that if Trump had decided on a diplomatic approach last Friday, reaching a settlement might have been unrealistic, which forced him, in a way, to adopt a more aggressive stance. Yet, this shift into “another terrain” carries its own unknown risks.
