Qatar Intercepts Iranian Missile Targeting US Base
Qatar’s Ministry of Defense has reported that its air defense systems successfully intercepted an Iranian missile that was aimed at Al-Udeid Air Force Base, a significant U.S. military installation. The ministry condemned what they called “brave attacks” from Iran.
On Monday, numerous Iranian missiles were launched toward Al-Udeid, which accommodates about 10,000 U.S. service members. This aggression appeared to be a response to a prior American strike on an Iranian nuclear facility.
Al Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed strong disapproval of Iran’s actions in Qatar’s airspace.
“Qatar firmly condemns the missile attacks on Al-Udeid Air Force Base by Iranian forces, viewing it as a serious violation of our airspace, international law, and the sovereignty outlined in the United Nations Charter,” Ansari stated.
He noted that the intercepted missile came as part of an effort to de-escalate tensions.
“We can confirm that Qatar’s air defenses thwarted the attack,” he added. “Such military escalations threaten regional stability and could have dire implications for international peace.”
He also pointed out that Qatar has been among the first to raise concerns about rising Israeli tensions in the area, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials are closely watching Iran’s actions, with a defense secretary indicating that the attacks involved both short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles.
“Currently, there are no reports of U.S. casualties,” the defense official mentioned, adding that they are monitoring the situation carefully and will update as needed.
Several reports suggest that Tehran had given Qatar advance notice before the missile launches, likely to limit casualties and promote de-escalation.
“We expected some retaliation, similar to the response after the Soleimani incident,” a senior White House official commented, referring to the 2020 killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.
