Most House Democrats have teamed up with Republicans to reduce their efforts to remove Trump following his military actions in Iran.
In a decisive vote of 344-79, the House opted to set aside a single impeachment article from Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who has been a vocal advocate for Trump’s expulsion in recent months.
A significant 128 Democrats voted against the impeachment effort.
“I’m not feeling great about this,” Green said prior to the vote. “But we can’t allow anyone to lead 300 million people into war without a discussion in Congress.”
Green has accused Trump of abusing his power by ordering strikes against Iran’s facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordaw.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) quickly moved to table the impeachment article.
Some Democrats, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Shawn Kasten (D-Ill.), showed support for impeachment after the attack, but only Ocasio-Cortez ultimately voted against bringing the article forward.
Democratic leaders were careful not to heavily criticize Green, but suggested that these impeachment efforts could detract from more urgent issues, such as their opposition to significant legislative proposals.
Trump successfully fended off two impeachment attempts during his first term.
“I recognize that the Constitution has purpose, or it may all be in vain,” Green remarked about promoting the impeachment efforts.
Earlier this year, Green was removed from the House floor for interrupting Trump’s speech during a joint session of Congress.
Many lawmakers have long called for Trump’s removal.
Back in February, Green sought impeachment after Trump’s controversial suggestion that the U.S. could take control of the Gaza Strip.
In April, he pledged to revive impeachment efforts against Trump. Similar attempts were made during Trump’s first term.
Just a month ago, Rep. Sri Taneder (D-Mich.) introduced an article of impeachment against Trump amid some backlash from within his party.
