Teen Charged with First-Degree Murder in Texas High School Incident
A Texas teenager named Carmelo Anthony is facing first-degree murder charges related to the death of a 17-year-old during a high school track event in April.
The 17-year-old was charged by a judge on Tuesday for allegedly killing Austin Metcalf following a dispute over seating at the Intercollegiate League 11-5A Championship held on April 2.
“My team has been presenting evidence to the judge for weeks. Today, I summarized that evidence and requested the judge to formally charge Carmelo Anthony with first-degree murder,” a statement from the prosecution indicated.
The situation has sparked considerable outrage, particularly after Anthony was released on a $250,000 bond. He is reportedly living with his family in a home valued at $900,000 within a gated community in Frisco, Texas.
Neighbors mentioned that Anthony appeared to have acquired a new car following the alleged attack.
Interestingly, he managed to convince the judge to reduce his bond from $1 million, citing financial constraints.
According to Anthony, he claimed self-defense during the incident. A fundraising page established for his legal expenses has gathered over $530,000.
After the charges were brought forth, Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, released a video where he emphasized the claims of self-defense. “We believe that once all facts are laid out and the complete story is told, the judge will arrive at a just conclusion,” he stated.
As it stands, the District Attorney’s office has pointed out that if convicted, Anthony could face a life sentence.
