Concerns Among Democrats Highlighted by Former Clinton Campaign Manager
A former campaign manager for Hillary Clinton has expressed serious concerns about the current state of the Democratic Party, describing it as “really depressing” with a lack of clear messaging and leadership.
In a recent interview with journalist Mark Halperin, Patty Solis Doyle—who led Clinton’s unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic nomination in 2008—shared her thoughts. She pointed out that the party seems to be lacking direction, noting that they don’t have a solid agenda or alternative ideas to challenge President Biden and the Republican Party.
She remarked, “When you lose, the party that lost… was attacked and criticized, they were the stupidest people who walked the planet, and ‘Why did you miss that?’ That’s what’s happening to Democrats now.” This sense of frustration isn’t new; Solis Doyle highlighted the anxiety within the party about its future.
Solis Doyle didn’t hold back when discussing President Biden’s leadership. “If your party holds the White House, the party leader is the president,” she noted. “If your party doesn’t hold the White House, the party’s leader is the last president of that party. So now it’s Joe Biden for us, but he’s completely off the radar.”
Despite her robust experience in political campaigns, she expressed relief at not being engaged in the current political fray. “It sounds really depressing, what’s going on at the party,” she lamented. Overall, she feels like the Democrats are struggling in a significant way.
Polls have shown that many Democrats share her pessimism. A survey conducted in May indicated that only about a third expressed optimism about the party moving forward.
Solis Doyle made history as the first Hispanic woman to manage a presidential campaign, a fact that adds depth to her perspective on the challenges facing the Democratic Party today.
