NFL Owners Debate Tush Push Ban
Nashville, Tennessee – Dallas Goedert doesn’t need to step aside from his role supporting Jalen Hurts during the Eagles’ signature play, the “Tush Push.”
Recently, NFL owners found themselves in a heated discussion, pondering whether the Eagles should face restrictions on this effective strategy. The Green Bay Packers proposed a ban on the Tush Push, with reports indicating that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie passionately defended the play during the debate.
Ultimately, the NFL owners decided against the Packers’ proposed rule change, allowing the Tush Push—or “brother thrusts”—to remain a legal tactic.
Goedert expressed his approval, sharing his excitement, “It’s a great football play. In my view, executing a third-and-one can be particularly tricky. If someone disrupts the play in the backfield, that can end your drive pretty quickly.”
The support for the Eagles’ play stems from the idea that it’s understandable and accessible for any team. Although Philadelphia utilizes it more frequently than others, like the Buffalo Bills with Josh Allen, the play is still viewed as universally applicable.
Goedert detailed the team’s focus during training. “We put in a lot of effort on this. Our offensive line trains hard for it. It’s not unique to us; other teams can run the play, but they don’t execute it quite like we do.”
In a lighthearted moment, he commented on critics of the play, saying, “Why take away something that teams excel at? It feels counterproductive.”
While the Eagles won’t practice Tush Push plays until training camp, Goedert recently participated in Tight End University, a gathering of NFL tight ends at Vanderbilt University. During this event, fellow tight end George Kittle showcased Goedert’s skills to illustrate what sets great players apart in the league.
Goedert reflected on the camaraderie among players, laughing as he noted, “At first, George only highlighted his own clips, but now he includes others. We all enjoy seeing each other’s work; it’s great to know that the best in the business recognize our contributions.”
As he continues to develop in his role, Goedert is committed to making the most of every opportunity, especially when it comes to successfully executing the Tush Push.
