GA's Excess Tax Refund: All you should know about the potential $500 refund

The Georgia Legislature has approved a one-time tax refund for residents, with households eligible to receive up to $500. Here’s what you should know.

Macon, Georgia – Many Georgians are now seeing surplus tax refunds deposited into their bank accounts, labeled as “gasttaxrfd.” The amount varies based on the taxpayer’s filing method.

However, not all residents will receive a refund right away, and according to the Georgia Department of Revenue, this is intentional.

To manage the process efficiently and prevent system overload, the department issues refunds in batches.

This has led to a lot of questions surrounding when individuals might see these funds reflected in their accounts, so let’s delve into what we know about the process.

When are tax refunds deposited?

The surplus tax refunds in Georgia are generally sent to qualifying taxpayers regularly, as noted by Joseph Snowden, the Georgia Department of Revenue’s director of foreign affairs and communications.

How many taxes are deposited into accounts?

The Department of Revenue has indicated that it’s still uncertain if all refunds are currently being deposited.

Snowden also mentioned that the agency plans to run reports on Friday to gather more information.

Who qualifies for these tax refunds?

If you’ve paid taxes in Georgia during the 2023 and 2024 tax years, you may be eligible for a surplus tax refund, contingent on being owed state taxes for 2023.

The Georgia Department of Revenue provided the following clarifications:

  • Taxpayers filing without an extension must have submitted their tax returns by May 1, 2025. If an extension was granted, the deadline is October 15, 2025.
  • Individuals must be liable for taxes for the 2023 tax year.
  • Tax refunds are available to Georgia residents, part-year residents, and non-residents.
  • Dependents cannot claim refunds on someone else’s 2023 tax return.

What are the refund amounts?

The refund amount varies based on individual tax liabilities and filing methods:

  • Single or married filing separately: Up to $250
  • Head of household: Up to $375
  • Married couples filing jointly: Up to $500

If your Georgia tax liability is below these amounts, the refund will only match what was paid in state taxes; no more than that will be refunded.

How can I check my eligibility for the refund?

Taxpayers can verify their eligibility for the refund on the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website by entering specific tax-related details.

Why is Georgia providing these surplus tax refunds?

The Legislature enacted House Bill 112, which allocates $1 billion towards surplus tax payments, outlining both the refund process and eligibility criteria.
