NATO Summit Highlights Remarks on Ceasefire
During a NATO summit in The Hague on June 25, 2025, Secretary General Mark Latte affectionately referred to President Donald Trump as “dad” amid discussions about the recent ceasefire issues between Israel and Iran.
Latte made his comments while Trump was addressing the ongoing tensions, pointing out how the two nations have, in his view, been fighting “like two kids in the schoolyard.” He suggested perhaps it might be better to let them settle their disputes for a bit before intervening.
“They fought like two kids in the schoolyard. They fought like hell, and you can’t stop them. Just let them fight for a couple of minutes,” he remarked.
In a light-hearted manner, Latte added, “And ‘daddy’ should sometimes use strong language and do something to stop it.”
Trump, on his part, responded, “You need to use strong language sometimes. Certain languages are necessary.”
The exchange seemed to reflect a casual rapport between the leaders, even as they delved into serious matters. Following up on a recent statement, Trump expressed his views on the ceasefire’s challenges, emphasizing the need for decisive action regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Trump stated, “After the violation of the ceasefire, we can’t let this go unchallenged.”
Latte also commended the U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities and Trump’s push for increased defense spending among NATO allies. He noted the importance of maintaining security and fairness among member nations.
“We need to keep ourselves safe from our enemies, but it’s only fair to expect equitable contributions from all,” he remarked.
A journalist at the summit later asked Trump about Latte’s playful nickname. With a smile, Trump responded, “He likes me. I think he likes me.”
As of the last update on June 25, rocket attacks from both sides appeared to have ceased, albeit briefly, at 11:24 AM, indicating a temporary lull in the ongoing conflict.
