Trump administration warns California of possible immediate action regarding transgender athletes

California Under Threat from Trump Administration over Transgender Athletes

The Trump administration has stated that California is in violation of the 1973 Title IX federal civil rights law regarding transgender athletes and has warned of possible “enforcement action” if the state’s policies do not change.

In February, an investigation was initiated by the U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office concerning the participation of transgender athletes in girls’ sports in California. Linda McMahon confirmed that the state is indeed breaching civil rights laws.

“The nation must quickly adhere to Title IX or face subsequent consequences,” McMahon remarked.

She urged California to “voluntarily agree” to amend its policies or face “immediate enforcement action” from the federal government.

Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom was criticized for what some deemed “deeply unfair” policies that permit males to compete in women’s sports. This has led to both the California Department of Education and the California Scholastic Federation allowing recent practices to continue, which has raised concerns among parents about fairness and the potential for compromised competition.

“The Trump administration has consistently prioritized enforcing Title IX protections for women and girls, and our findings confirm California’s failure to comply with federal law,” she added. “The state must either quickly align with Title IX or face consequences.”

On Friday, parents from Costa Mesa protested against transgender competition, gathering tens of thousands of signatures on a petition directed at the CIF, which oversees high school sports in California.

Chino Valley Unified Education Board Chairman Sonja Shaw, known for advocating against transgender policies, praised the education sector’s stance. “CIF and CDE were given numerous warnings,” she said. “But instead of taking them seriously, they dismissed our concerns.” She expressed frustration over the prevailing attitude towards parents who advocate for fairness.

Previously, Trump had used the threat of federal funding cuts to pressure California into compliance with his executive orders, but state officials have rejected such threats, arguing that California contributes more to federal funds than it receives.

As Newsom stated on social media earlier in June, “Californians will pay the federal government the bill… We’re going to pay more than $80 billion in taxes than we’ve received back. It seems reasonable to consider cutting ties.”
