Jamaal Bowman faces online backlash over strange reasoning for obesity and diabetes in the Black community

Jamaal Bowman’s Controversial Remarks About Health Disparities

Former New York Representative Jamaal Bowman has sparked significant backlash after asserting that racism contributes to the prevalence of chronic illnesses among Black Americans. His comments prompted a wave of ridicule on social media, where many found his reasoning laughable.

While participating in a CNN panel discussing healthcare issues, Bowman expressed frustration over the health issues facing Black communities. He claimed these problems stem from societal stressors, referring to them as “the N-word by paranoids.” His remarks came in the context of a broader discussion on political violence, where Republican Mark Short had suggested that both left and right politicians are “performative artists.” Bowman countered by citing various instances of political violence attributed to the right.

He emphasized, “This is America! The problem is we are not confronting America’s original sin, which is steeped in hatred and racism against Black and brown people, women, and the LGBTQ community.” He then proceeded to lay blame for rising health issues—like heart disease, cancer, and obesity—directly at the stress experienced in daily life as a Black American.

Bowman criticized Republicans for dismissing claims of racism, saying, “If your colleagues are trying to listen, learn, engage, grow, and stop being so full of hatred, we could have a better country. But unfortunately, we are still here.” His appearance on the panel quickly went viral, collecting millions of views, though many commenters were not convinced by his arguments.

Responses varied, with some users calling his stance misguided. Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch remarked, “It may be laughing, but Mr. Bowman repeats the standard argument that has been run for a long time by communist racists.” Another user challenged, “It’s not how health or science works. Those problems have real causes; it’s not serious to blame racism.” Others took to humor, sharing personal anecdotes like being called “crackers” and questioning whether “rappers cause cancer and obesity”—reflecting a general skepticism about Bowman’s assertions.

Bowman’s past has also been a subject of ridicule; he was caught on surveillance pulling a fire alarm at the U.S. Capitol, claiming he was merely rushing to vote. He later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, resulting in a $1,000 fine for the incident.
