James Hagens and the NHL Draft Speculation
LOS ANGELES – The focus of intrigue for the upcoming NHL Draft is James Hagens.
Many are curious if this Long Island native, projected as a potential No. 1 pick, could end up falling to the 10th or 11th spots instead.
Every scenario feels intertwined.
“If I slide, I’ll go where I want most,” Hagens mentioned on Thursday. “I’ll show what I can do on the ice. I’m not overly concerned. Just being here is an honor. Wherever I end up, it’s going to be a motivating experience.”
Hagens spent much of his youth idolizing players like John Tavares, watching games at both Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center. For the Islanders, selecting him would bring a unique narrative to the team.
Although he frequently states that he’ll be content wherever he lands, staying close to home resonates deeply with him. As an Islanders fan, having a player from his background is something he’s longed for.
“The place you grew up, the pride you felt during your childhood—going back to where it all began is really special,” Hagens reflected. “Hockey has always been a part of my life, and that’s what sparked my passion.”
The Islanders may explore trading options to move up in the draft, potentially considering packages that include players like Noah Dobson or Jean-Gabriel Pageau, along with others.
As the date approaches, Dobson and Alexander Romanov are among restricted free agents, with murmurs that Dobson could leave if the Islanders don’t meet his contract demands.
Yet Hagens remains optimistic, simply eager to hear his name called on draft night.
“You won’t be disappointed being selected for a team here,” he said. “It’s a thrilling moment, no matter where you go. The goal is to be somewhere you truly want to be.”
