Rep. Don Bacon Announces Retirement
Recent reports indicate that Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) will not be seeking reelection in 2026 and plans to retire from Congress. This comes after he has served five terms representing Nebraska’s Second Congressional District.
Bacon is expected to officially announce his decision on Monday, as reported by multiple news outlets. His office and campaign have yet to confirm this news, but Bacon has shared several messages on social media thanking people for their support during his tenure in Washington.
Interestingly, Bacon’s district, which includes Omaha—the largest city in Nebraska—voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris over President Trump in the 2024 elections. It’s a bit of a flip-flop, as the same district supported Trump in 2016 and also Biden in 2020. I mean, it’s just fascinating how electoral tides can change.
Bacon narrowly won reelection last year, defeating his Democratic opponent by less than two percentage points. His exit could create an opportunity for Democrats to gain ground in a House that’s already closely divided following the midterms in 2026.
At 61, Bacon has been a vocal critic of Trump’s foreign policy, specifically concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Earlier this year, he remarked that Trump’s stance seemed aligned with a “Russian view,” suggesting that the former president was granting too much leeway to Russia.
In a recent commentary, Bacon criticized Trump for what he called “moral ambiguity” after Trump both targeted Putin and lambasted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the same message. Bacon noted that while Trump was attacking Zelensky, Putin was actively bombing Ukrainian cities. It feels a bit misplaced, doesn’t it?
His departure opens the door for potential shifts in Congressional dynamics, reflecting the broader political landscape in a nation where opinions often seem divided. Whether this will lead to significant changes in the House remains to be seen.
