That’s an endorsement no one really wants.
Convicted former lawmaker George Santos is urging Republicans to stray from party lines and support New York Mayor Eric Adams in his re-election bid.
The disgraced ex-official has asked GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa to reconsider his campaign, suggesting that aligning with fellow Republicans could be the best way to defeat socialist Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in November’s general election.
Santos mentioned on X, “New Yorkers are at a crossroads, and their interests haven’t been prioritized.” He spoke shortly after former Governor Andrew Cuomo endorsed Mamdani in the Democratic primary.
“The choice is clear. Eric Adams offers the only realistic path forward. Republicans, conservatives, and practical voters need to acknowledge the situation. Sliwa doesn’t have a chance in this race,” he asserted.
“Holding onto unrealistic hopes helps no one,” he added.
On Wednesday, Santos proposed to Adams and the founders of the Guardian Angels that they form similar “coalitions.” This comes after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the presidential race last year, distancing himself from Donald Trump.
Sliwa, the Republican contender, firmly stated he would not exit the race, labeling Santos as an “unreliable” con artist.
“Hey @nycmayor,” Santos tweeted. “Call Curtis Sliwa and appoint him today as Vice Mayor of Public Security to form a coalition aimed at saving NYC!”
Despite losing the primary, Democrat Adams is still running in the November election as an independent. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Adams campaign dismissed Santos’ endorsement, asserting that Adams is concentrating on building a broad coalition grounded in integrity and effectiveness, rather than engaging in side distractions.
Santos is set to start a seven-year prison term next month.
