On Sunday, Israeli forces directed Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate as they intensified military actions against Hamas. This development coincided with President Donald Trump calling for an end to the ongoing conflict, amidst renewed attempts to negotiate a ceasefire.
“Contract in Gaza and reclaim hostages,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform earlier that day.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to discuss the status of military operations later that day.
A senior official indicated that the army would inform him that their objectives are nearing completion, though they warned that expanding operations into new areas could jeopardize the safety of the remaining Israeli hostages.
In a public statement disseminated via X and text messages to locals, the military urged people in the northern enclave to move south towards the Al Mawasi region of Khan Yunis, which Israel has classified as a humanitarian zone.
However, Palestinian and UN officials argue that safety is an elusive concept anywhere in Gaza.
The military asserted that Israeli defense forces are employing significant force in these areas, mentioning that their operations are broadening westward, aiming to diminish the capabilities of terrorist groups.
The evacuation notice affects Jabaria and most urban areas of Gaza.
Residents and medical professionals report that Israeli airstrikes have escalated in Jabaria, resulting in several destroyed homes and at least six fatalities.
Additionally, five individuals were reported dead in an airstrike targeting a tent camp in Khan Yunis, according to medical sources.
Pushing a new ceasefire
This uptick in violence comes as Arab nations backed by the U.S., namely Egypt and Qatar, initiate fresh efforts towards a ceasefire that would not only end the 20-month-long conflict but also facilitate the release of those hostages still held by Hamas.
Interest in resolving the ongoing Gaza conflict has surged following bombings in Israel and Iran’s nuclear sites.
Hamas officials stated they are prepared to re-engage in ceasefire discussions; however, they emphasized that any agreements must ensure an end to hostilities and require Israel’s withdrawal from coastal areas.
Hamas indicated a willingness to free the remaining hostages in Gaza, contingent upon conditions that would halt the war.
Israel, on the other hand, maintains that hostilities can only cease if Hamas disarms, something the group firmly rejects.
The recent escalation in violence traces back to October 2023 when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages.
Israel’s retaliatory military actions have led to over 56,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced approximately 2.3 million people, creating a dire humanitarian crisis.
