DeSantis Defends Alligator Alcatraz for Detaining Illegal Immigrants

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently spoke in support of the Alligator Alcatraz, also known as the Miami-Dade Collier Training Facility, during a press conference. He approved its use for detaining illegal immigrants.

Highlighting its location in the heart of the Everglades, DeSantis emphasized that the facility remains operational. He commented on the logistical aspects, noting that although there are training flights associated with the site, it features a substantial runway and minimal buildings.

According to him, this location’s unique environment provides a natural barrier, citing alligators and pythons as part of its security. “So security is amazing… natural and unless it’s not,” he remarked.

DeSantis believes the facility effectively contributes to the broader goal of reducing illegal immigration and facilitating deportations. He stated, “If you don’t, you know you’ll continue to have this illegal immigration problem.” In his view, it’s straightforward to transport individuals for removal; he illustrated that, “You literally drive them 2,000 feet, put them on the plane, then they’re gone. It’s very logistically simple.”

He referred to the facility as a “force multiplier” and mentioned discussions with President Donald Trump, indicating the president’s enthusiasm for the initiative. DeSantis noted, “But I think Florida isn’t the only thing he wants to see in this fight, right?” He argued Florida is simply assisting the Trump administration in addressing voters’ desires.

“We’re literally doing what voters who elected us all have requested over the years,” he added, emphasizing that immigration was a critical issue in the last election.

The facility is set to open this week, with Trump anticipated to be present for the event.
