Marcos Leonardo Leads Al Hilal to Victory Over Manchester City
Marcos Leonardo netted his second goal in the 112th minute, helping Al Hilal secure a surprising 4-3 victory against Manchester City in Orlando on Monday night. This win propelled the Saudi Arabian team into the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup.
Alongside Leonardo, Malcom and Kalidou Koulibaly also found the back of the net for Al Hilal, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made an impressive ten saves throughout the match.
Al Hilal is set to face Fulminence in Orlando on Friday, following the Brazilian side’s 2-0 victory over Inter Milan earlier that day.
For Manchester City, Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland, and Phil Foden contributed to their scoreline.
The game’s pivotal moment occurred when Sergej Milinkovic’s header was stopped by City’s Ederson, just one of his two saves during the match. The ball then deflected off Leonardo, who skillfully directed it into the open net, giving Al Hilal the lead.
Koulibaly extended Al Hilal’s advantage with a header that made it 3-2 during extra time, with just four minutes remaining. Reuben Neves initiated the corner that led to Koulibaly’s goal.
City had some strong chances late in regulation. In the 84th minute, Manuel Akanji attempted a header that struck the post. Haaland was poised for a tap-in, but Ali Rajami intervened just in time to clear the ball. Moments later, Reuben Diaz hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from outside the box.
Al Hilal made an impressive comeback, scoring twice within the first seven minutes of the second half after entering with a one-goal deficit.
One of the goals came just 42 seconds after the second half began. City’s Ederson saved a shot from Nasser Al Dosari, but Malcom’s follow-up was blocked. The ball subsequently landed at Leonardo’s feet, and he converted it into a goal.
In the 52nd minute, Malcolm capitalized on a misplay by former City player Joao Cancelo, dribbling past Ederson and scoring with a left-footed shot to take a 2-1 lead.
City soon leveled the game again. Haaland made a weak contact with a header during a corner, but the ball ricocheted back to him, allowing him to score with a left-footed shot that deflected off Bounou.
Overall, Manchester City dominated the first half, recording seven shots on target and holding a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Silva’s opening goal in the 9th minute sparked some controversy; the ball touched the right bicep of teammate Ryan Ait Nouri before finding its way to Silva, who scored with a left-foot shot. Al Hilal players protested, claiming the goal was invalid.
Bounou played a crucial role in keeping Al Hilal competitive, making significant saves throughout the match, including a notable left-handed stop against Savinho in the 24th minute and a deflection of Josko Gvardiol’s header shortly after.
