Trump Backs Adams, Warns Mamdani

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed support for New York City Mayor Eric Adams ahead of his re-election bid. However, he also delivered a stern warning to democratic socialists and the mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani.

Speaking from a detention facility in Florida, Trump referred to Adams as “a very good guy.” He noted that the Justice Department’s decision to dismiss federal corruption charges against Adams was something he aided. “He had issues and was treated unfairly,” Trump claimed, emphasizing that Adams wasn’t feeling down despite facing multiple charges himself.

Adams has faced allegations of corruption and bribery, which both he and Trump argue stem from politically motivated retaliation linked to former President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

In a notable escalation, Trump warned Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist candidate, that he could face arrest if he interferes with immigration enforcement issues. “We have to arrest him,” Trump insisted.

This week, Trump focused on the competitive New York mayoral race, hinting at his support for Adams. “Do you think Republicans can win, or do you think they’ll make a good independent run for mayor?” he pondered.

Mamdani has been highly critical of immigration enforcement agencies, calling them a menace that infringes upon the rights of New Yorkers. He has previously stated that the NYPD should prioritize public safety rather than collaborating with federal agents.

He advocates for stringent sanctuary laws that prohibit immigration enforcement from operating in schools, hospitals, and city properties unless a judicial warrant is present.

Potential Changes Under Mamdani

If the democratic socialist Mamdani wins, he has ambitious plans that include:

  • Housing: He proposes a freeze on rent stabilization rates and aims to build 200,000 union homes in the next decade.
  • Public Services: Plans to freeze citywide bus and subway fares and introduce universal childcare for children aged six weeks to five years.
  • Taxation: He aims to raise corporate taxes to 11.5% and impose an additional 2% income tax on individuals earning over $1 million, projecting to gather around $10 billion annually.
  • Education: Expanding funding for after-school programs and mental health support, along with creating a car-free zone around schools.
  • Safety and Health: Establishing a new department focused on mental health, homelessness, and crisis response, while utilizing funds from opioid settlements for safe injection facilities.
  • Environment: Initiatives include upgrading public schools with sustainable technologies and promoting “zero emission” buildings.
