Trump and Modi Discuss Trade During G7 Summit
During the G7 summit in France, President Donald Trump shared that he had a “very good” discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.
Trump characterized Modi as a “tough negotiator” and hinted at a future visit to India, stating he plans to go there “at some point.” This marked the first meeting between the two leaders since February 2025, when Modi visited Washington shortly after Trump’s second term began. At that time, both leaders agreed to tackle the issues surrounding trade and tariffs. India has been actively seeking a visit from Trump for several months, potentially aiming for a larger multilateral discussion that could also involve Japan and Australia.
However, the previously established relationship encountered challenges when the U.S. imposed high tariffs on Indian goods, a move linked to India’s increased purchases of Russian oil and closer ties with Pakistan, its regional rival.
Modi addressed the U.S.-Iran peace deal, saying, “You have made great efforts to reach this understanding, and I am confident that the issue of seafarers will be paramount in the implementation of this agreement. Mr. President, I once again deeply appreciate and greatly admire your efforts to ensure peace in West Asia.”
The relationship took a hit when three Indian sailors lost their lives in an attack on a commercial ship in the Gulf of Oman on June 10. In response to this incident, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India last month, aiming to repair ties.
During their recent meeting, Modi stressed to Trump that the safety of Indian sailors operating in the Strait of Hormuz is of “paramount importance” to India.
“You know that hundreds of thousands of Indian seafarers work around the world, including in the Strait of Hormuz. Their safety is of utmost importance to us,” Modi said.
When asked whether he conveyed condolences for the deceased Indian sailors, Trump responded, “It’s a tough job. There’s no question about it. We’re in this together… We care about all of those guys; they’re great people.”
Furthermore, Trump affirmed his commitment to support India against any future attacks.
Trump stated, “If they are attacked, we will help them. If someone goes after that guy, we’re going to be there. Now, I don’t know if we have a new leader.”
