As Mamdani focuses on New York City's affluent residents in his tax proposal, attention shifts to his mother's $2 million Chelsea apartment.

Mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani is shaping his political identity around ambitious plans to transform the city’s housing landscape. His agenda promotes rent freezes, alterations to tax policies, and a financial shift from “wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods” to support low-income areas.

However, questions may arise regarding Mamdani’s family background, particularly connections to his mother, Mira Nia, a renowned filmmaker and professor at Columbia University.

Nia, who is recognized for films like “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Monday,” has owned an impressive loft in West Chelsea, Manhattan, for over ten years.

She acquired the loft at 420 W. 25th St. in 2008 for approximately $1.375 million, as per public records.

This corner loft features a striking 12-foot ceiling and a kitchen designed by Siffini, along with a spacious private bath that includes a double-glazed shower, listed for $1.45 million in 2019.

Currently, the property is valued at around $1.9 million, according to Redfin.

While Nia owned the apartment, her son was kicking off his political journey, one that likely emphasizes redistributing the tax burdens impacting wealthier Manhattan neighborhoods for his campaign.

“We aim to transfer tax responsibilities from homeowners in the outer boroughs to those living in affluent, whiter areas,” Mamdani’s housing proposal states.

At 33, Mamdani represents Astoria in the state legislature and lives in a rent-stabilized one-bedroom apartment in Queens, where similar units are priced around $2,500 a month.

Additionally, he possesses four acres of land in Uganda, acquired in 2012, a place he remembers fondly from his early years before moving at seven, as detailed in his 2024 financial disclosure.

A proponent of progressive housing reforms, Mamdani is advocating for rent freezes in stable units and aims to revamp the city’s convoluted tax system.

Recently, he won the Democratic primary, positioning himself as a strong contender in this predominantly liberal city for the upcoming November election.

His campaign has not provided a comment on these discussions.

Mamdani, who began his term as a Democrat in 2021, will be challenging incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is under pressure to resign due to federal corruption allegations from September 2024. Republican candidate Curtis Swa is also in the race.
