Supreme Court permits Trump to send violent criminal immigrants to South Sudan — liberal justices are upset

Supreme Court Backs Trump Administration on Deportation Policy

In a recent decision, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing the deportation of violent criminals to countries unrelated to their origin. This ruling, decided by a 7-2 vote, has sparked significant backlash, particularly among liberal justices.

The core issue revolved around whether the government could deport undocumented immigrants convicted of violent offenses to different countries than where these crimes were committed. Some individuals were prepared for flights to South Sudan, despite lower court rulings suggesting they should have received appropriate notice and a chance to present their cases.

“Their crimes are so heinous that no country wants to accept them,” an official stated.

On Thursday, the court permitted the government to proceed with plans for deporting these violent offenders to South Sudan, despite a previous ruling against such actions by Judge Brian Murphy of the Massachusetts District Court. Following that ruling, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a list detailing the immigrants and their crimes to garner public backing.

DHS emphasized their commitment to eradicating violent individuals from the US, stating, “We have implemented deportation flights from Texas, focusing on some of the most dangerous individuals.” The remarks echoed the sentiment that these criminals pose a significant threat.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, expressed strong objections. She noted that the administration plans to transfer eight non-citizens back to regions where they could potentially face torture or death. “What the government is trying to do is flagrant,” she asserted.

Sotomayor further criticized the court for what she perceived as preferential treatment toward the Trump administration, claiming, “It’s clear that while others must adhere to the standard legal protocols, this administration has some sort of expedited support from the Supreme Court.”

The ruling has generated debate, and Judge Murphy, who previously opposed this policy, had been nominated by former President Joe Biden.
