Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Detained by Immigration Authorities

Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was taken into custody by federal immigration agents outside his Los Angeles home on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the arrest was executed by the Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) based on an outstanding arrest warrant issued in Mexico.

ICE claims that the 39-year-old former WBC Middleweight World Champion has ties to organized crime, specifically allegations of trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives. Furthermore, DHS states that Chavez is reportedly working with the Sinaloa Cartel, which has been classified as a foreign terrorist organization by former President Donald Trump.

Chavez’s attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, described the serious cartel accusations as a “different headline that simply terrifies the community.” He added that over 25 federal agents surrounded Chavez’s house, blocking streets and detaining him without notifying his family.

DHS also mentioned that Chavez is being processed for a quick removal from the country.

Chavez currently faces ongoing weapons-related charges in Los Angeles County. His legal representatives have stated that lower courts could allow him into a mental health conversion program, potentially leading to those charges being dismissed. He was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on firearms charges back in 2023.

Goldstein stressed that Chavez is complying with all court-mandated requirements regarding the diversion program.

Chavez secured the WBC middleweight title in June 2011, defending it multiple times. However, he faced a recent defeat against social media influencer turned boxer Jake Paul in a cruiserweight match held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Hailing from Sinaloa, Mexico, Chavez began his professional boxing career at just 17 years of age in 2002. He is the son of Julio Cesar Chavez Gonzalez, a celebrated multi-division world champion.

The DHS indicated that Chavez entered the U.S. in August 2023 on a valid B-2 tourist visa. Nevertheless, the department also noted that his spouse has connections to the Sinaloa cartel through a past relationship with a prominent figure in the organization, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán’s late son.

In December, the US Citizenship Office identified Chavez as a “severe public safety threat,” leading to his detention, although he was later permitted to re-enter the U.S. in January through the San Isidro port near San Diego.

ICE alleges that Chavez is suspected of making false statements in his applications for lawful permanent residency.

“This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate has an aggressive arrest warrant related to trafficking in firearms, ammunition, and explosives. He was taken into custody by ICE. The previous administration was alarmed to identify such individuals as threats to public safety but chose to prioritize his removal. Under President Trump, no one, including esteemed athletes, is above the law. The message to cartel affiliates is clear: we will find you, and there will be consequences.”

Chavez’s detention comes amidst a recent increase in federal immigration enforcement actions throughout the Los Angeles area, which aligns with a renewed political focus on illegal immigration and the fight against foreign terrorism.
