Experts Predicted Free Markets Would Harm Argentina — It Seems They Were Completely Mistaken

Argentina’s Economic Landscape Under Javier Milei

The state of Argentina’s economy today defies the forecasts of many “experts” who claimed that President Javier Milei’s unconventional approach would spell disaster for the nation.

A group of libertarians, armed with bold promises to slash government spending and embrace free market strategies, has taken action amidst a landscape marked by inflation, debt, and deep-rooted poverty. Critics had predicted that Milei’s methods would lead to economic turmoil, yet early outcomes seem to challenge those predictions.

Just days ahead of the November 2023 presidential election, 108 economists signed an open letter addressing Milei’s straightforward solutions. They voiced concerns that, in the short term, his approach could result in severe real-world consequences and would significantly limit future policy options.

The Economist Editorial Committee remarked, “His policies aren’t well thought out. Building consensus is not in his wheelhouse, and governing could prove challenging.” This sentiment echoed points made in a September 2023 article discussing “The dangerous charm of Javier Milei.”

In the year since Milei took office, Argentina has reportedly posted some of its strongest economic results in years. The GDP surged by 7.7% in April, surpassing prior expectations compared to the same month in 2024.

Looking ahead, the OECD forecasts a GDP rise. In contrast, the country faced a 5.2% decline in 2025, following a 1.3% dip in 2024 and a 1.9% drop the previous year.

After grappling with significant inflation due to historical economic dysfunction, Argentina saw a remarkable decrease, with inflation dropping to 1.5% between April and May—the lowest figure in five years. Annual inflation, which was at a daunting 160.9% in November 2023, fell to 43.5% by May.

Similarly, the poverty rate experienced a notable decline, decreasing from 52.9% in the first half of 2024 to 38.1% in the latter half.

Following Milei’s decision to repeal rent control laws, the availability of rental housing surged by 212% from December 2023 to June 2024. Analysts suggest that Argentina has begun an ambitious reform journey aimed at correcting longstanding macroeconomic imbalances, marked by a historic fiscal adjustment showing signs of success. Maintaining this reform momentum is seen as crucial for restoring confidence and stimulating growth in investment and productivity.

Milei, who labels himself an “Anarcho-Capitalist,” has been an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump’s initiatives to downsize the U.S. government, including efforts aimed at reducing federal spending.

“I come from a country that bought into all the misguided policies that led it from being one of the richest nations to one of the poorest,” Milei stated during a speech at the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference.
