New federal tax credit initiative to assist millions in obtaining school choice

Trump’s New Education Bill: A Game Changer?

President Trump recently signed a significant $3.3 trillion bill aimed at reshaping educational opportunities in the U.S. This legislation, which some are calling the “largest law in school selection history,” introduces a federal tax credit scholarship program. It’s a bold move that could potentially alter how families choose schools for their children.

In an interview, Tommy Schultz, President of the American Federation of Children, mentioned that he had been working on this law for a decade. This program allows individuals in every state to contribute $1,700 to local scholarship organizations. In return, they receive a full tax deduction for their donations.

The American Federation for Children promotes parental choice, making it easier for families to opt out of sending their kids to schools they don’t prefer—whether public or otherwise.

The Implications of Trump’s Legislative Move

Last week, Trump’s signing of this enormous bill included several tax provisions that will make tax rates lower for individuals and businesses, revisiting some aspects of his 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It even introduces new tax credits related to various labor costs.

One of the core objectives here is to expand educational choices across all 50 states. Schultz highlighted that “tax credits serve as funding mechanisms for private school selection programs.” Essentially, the program will allow taxpayers to lower their tax obligations similarly to how existing state scholarship programs operate.

“This initiative empowers families, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to invest in educational options for their children,” Schultz added, viewing it as a significant victory for school choice advocates.

Tax Science Scholarships are generally administered at state levels, making it possible for individuals or businesses to receive tax credits when contributing to nonprofits providing private school scholarships. Notably, changes introduced by this law will remain permanent, eliminating concerns about expiration dates.

Concerns Over Traditional Educational Structures

A spokesperson from the Department of Education, when questioned about Schultz’s statements, referenced Secretary Linda McMahon’s remarks on social media, asserting that the bill significantly expands school choice options. The federal government’s increasing involvement in school selection reflects a broader trend, particularly after several states enacted their versions of universal school selection laws.

Schultz argued that taxpayers should be able to bypass restrictive policies that hinder school choice, particularly in states lacking support for such movements. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, saying, “Our education system is in a downward spiral. We’re facing educational outcomes at a 30- or 40-year low.” This concern is supported by recent national education assessment results that follow the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

The Political Landscape

However, school choice initiatives often encounter resistance in predominantly blue states where teachers’ unions hold considerable influence. These groups typically oppose measures that they believe would undermine public school funding. Remarkably, no state controlled by Democrats has passed a school choice law.

“Every child in America deserves the chance to attend the best school they choose,” Schultz asserted. He believes that eliminating barriers imposed by unions and ensuring educational flexibility are crucial for all families seeking better options for their children.
