Jeffries says Trump administration 'playing footsie' with Russia

Jeffries Critiques Trump Over Russia’s Actions

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) accused President Trump of being too accommodating towards Russian President Vladimir Putin instead of standing firm with Ukraine.

He stated, “There is strong bipartisan support for sanctions against Vladimir Putin and Russia. It’s unfortunate that the Trump administration has been so lenient with him for months.”

The Democratic leaders emphasized that the U.S. has a clear stance regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Jeffries commented, “The aggression that Russia has launched against Ukraine is apparent. It’s not just about territorial integrity; it’s a battle between democracy, freedom, and tyranny—a confrontation between truth and propaganda.”

He further asserted, “The United States should consistently support democracy and freedom, which means standing with Ukraine until they achieve victory.”

Jeffries also called out Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after the Pentagon momentarily halted the transfer of several weapons to Ukraine last week due to a review of U.S. military stockpiles, a pause that was later lifted.

He remarked, “Hegseth is perhaps the most unqualified secretary of defense in our history. He undermines the Defense Agency’s capacity to protect Americans.”

Meanwhile, Trump, who had previously praised Putin, criticized the Russian leader on Tuesday for what he termed a dishonest attempt to end the conflict in Ukraine. He had campaigned last year on the promise of mediating a peace agreement.

“We’ve received quite a bit of nonsense from Putin, to be honest,” Trump stated. “He has treated us kindly, but it turned out to be meaningless.”

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) announced on Tuesday his intention to push for a swift vote on a stringent sanctions package that would impose a 500% tariff on imports from nations that purchase gas, uranium, and oil from Russia. This proposal has garnered more than 80 Senate co-sponsors from both parties.

Jeffries indicated he would review the specifics of the Senate’s proposed sanctions before making an official stance.

“I firmly support escalating and strengthening the sanctions that have been previously introduced regarding Russia, and working towards a resolution that restores Ukrainian sovereignty and puts an end to the killings of innocent civilians,” he said.

A recent poll revealed that the majority of Americans support sanctions against Russia and its allies in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

While Trump often voiced concerns about the war, he refrained from advocating for stricter penalties against Moscow. He mentioned on Tuesday that he was “keeping an eye” on Graham’s proposal for new sanctions.

“It’s a war that should never have happened,” Trump stated to reporters. “Many lives are being lost, and it needs to come to an end.”
