Tragic Flash Flood in Ruidoso, New Mexico

A flash flood in Ruidoso, New Mexico, has claimed the lives of at least three individuals, including two children. This tragic event unfolded after heavy rains on July 8th.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Mayor Lynn Crawford revealed that the victims, five-year-old Charlotte and seven-year-old Sebastian Trotter, were visiting from El Paso, Texas, at the time of the incident.

Authorities also confirmed that another man, believed to be in his forties or fifties, was found deceased. All three victims were swept away from the Riverside RV Park by the Rio Ruidoso during the flooding.

“Our hearts are broken and our stomachs combine the fact that we have lost these people,” Crawford shared.

Before their bodies were located, a Facebook post from a woman identifying herself as the children’s aunt sought help in finding the two kids. The Midtown Mountain Campground & RV Park expressed its condolences, highlighting the community’s anguish over the situation.

“As members of the Ruidoso community, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy, retaining our families, and everyone involved in our thoughts and prayers,” they noted in a Facebook post.

This disaster comes as Ruidoso was still recovering from last year’s wildfires, which left behind burned areas in the mountains. These scorched lands can significantly increase the risk of flash floods for several reasons.

  • Loss of Vegetation: Wildfires eliminate the plants that help absorb rainwater and stabilize soil, causing rapid runoff.
  • Soil Changes: The heat from fires can render soil hydrophobic, making it harder for water to penetrate.
  • Rapid Water Movement: In mountainous terrain like Ruidoso, rainwater flows downhill more quickly over burned ground, raising the chances of flash floods, particularly during heavy rainfall.

In summary, this devastating event highlights the precarious situation in areas recovering from natural disasters. Local communities often grapple with the aftermath, making them more vulnerable to subsequent tragedies.
