Dion Sanders Focuses on Team Amid Health Concerns
Dion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, is determined to shift his attention to the upcoming season rather than his recent health issues. Over the spring and early summer, he missed some time due to unspecified health problems, which raised questions as the Big 12 Media Day approached.
While he hasn’t disclosed the exact nature of his health challenges, Sanders shared that he is “already back” and gearing up for the new year in Boulder. “I’m here today,” he stated confidently. “I handle my responsibility. So I look forward to it. I can’t wait. You have to understand, part of the youth I haven’t seen yet. I’m very excited about it.”
Previously, Sanders has faced health complications, including blood clots in his legs and the amputation of two toes on his left leg in 2021. During that time at Jackson State, he had to miss three games while in the hospital. However, Sanders made it clear during the media session that he wants to focus on the team. “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team,” he said. “I’m cool. I live a lovely life. God has truly blessed me.”
He recently signed a five-year contract extension worth $54 million to continue leading the Buffaloes. As his son, Shedeur Sanders, prepares for his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, Coach Sanders is also focused on finding the best candidate to fill the quarterback role. Kaidon Salter, a transfer from Liberty, will compete for the starting spot against Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis. Although Salter noted he had “less contact” with Sanders, he acknowledged the importance of health for coaches as well as players.
