Tragic Shootings in Kentucky Church
On July 13, 2025, a chaotic scene unfolded when a suspect shot a Kentucky state trooper and then sought refuge in a nearby church, leading to further violence. The suspect, after fleeing the initial shooting, drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church. There, he reportedly carjacked a vehicle and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two women and injuries to two men.
This incident started unfolding around 11:30 AM local time when the suspect shot a trooper. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers shared updates during a press conference, explaining the details of the situation and its tragic aftermath.
“At approximately 11:36 AM, officers were dispatched following the shooting involving the trooper on Terminal Drive. The officers were alerted to the suspect’s vehicle from a license plate recognition system,” Weathers explained.
According to Chief Weathers, the wounded officers are currently in stable condition and receiving medical care.
“With the help of our Aviation Support Unit and the Real-Time Intelligence Center, we tracked the suspect’s vehicle to the church where he began firing at individuals on church property,” he stated.
Initial reports suggest the suspect may have had ties to people associated with the church.
Tragically, four individuals were shot at the church; two women died at the scene while the other two victims were transported to local hospitals. One was reported to have serious injuries, while the other remains stable.
In response to the violence, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his heartbreak over the shooting, denouncing what he referred to as “the senseless acts of violence.”
“We share our sorrow regarding the shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington. The other injured, including state police officers, are being treated nearby,” he said, urging prayers for all involved and commending the swift actions of the police.
Chief Weathers indicated that more details regarding the suspect would be available soon after authorities inform the individual’s family.
