Senate Democrat: Putin will be pleased about State Department job cuts

State Department Layoffs Viewed Positively by Putin, According to Sen. Van Hollen

During a CNN interview on Monday, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) expressed that he believes the recent layoffs at the State Department, affecting hundreds of employees, are seen as a positive development by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I think those who celebrate this move are our enemies. China will be pleased. Vladimir Putin will also be celebrating,” Van Hollen stated during a conversation with CNN’s John Berman. “Meanwhile, our allies might view this as another step backward in what seems like Donald Trump’s ongoing retreat.”

On Friday, the State Department announced the termination of 1,300 foreign service and civil servant positions as part of a reorganization plan introduced earlier this year by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

This decision drew immediate criticism from former diplomats and other individuals who argue that the Trump administration’s actions are undermining national security by diminishing the country’s diplomatic resources.

Van Hollen commented, “It’s clearly a major loss for those dedicated individuals who work each day as patriots for the United States, and it’s going to have consequences for our country as a whole. These individuals promote American interests and values globally, and while Trump may speak of an ‘America First’ approach, it feels more like a retreat that could affect us all.”

The State Department did not respond immediately when approached for comments regarding this matter.

In defense of the layoffs during a diplomatic trip to Asia last week, Rubio described the initiative as a “very intentional step to reorganize the State Department for greater efficiency and focus.”

“This isn’t about pushing people away. If a bureau is being closed, those positions simply aren’t necessary,” Rubio remarked while speaking with reporters in Malaysia.

This decision also followed Rubio’s earlier approval of closing the US International Development Agency within his department.

The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), which represents current and former diplomats, commented that these layoffs signify a retreat from the US’s global commitments to its allies.

They stated, “As allies look for security in times of uncertainty and test their rivals, the administration has opted to step back instead of relying on experienced individuals to guide us through this period. In contrast, countries like China are actively expanding their diplomatic influence.”

Van Hollen was among several Democrats who joined a protest outside the State Department’s headquarters on Friday.
