Ice Cream Gets a Healthier Makeover
American ice cream is on its way to becoming healthier. A recent announcement from the USDA, along with figures from the Health and Human Services Department, highlighted that artificial colors will be phased out of ice cream products by the end of 2027.
Brook Rollins of the USDA noted, “These efforts assist families in making better choices and striving for better health.” She also expressed gratitude to the International Dairy Food Association (IDFA) for spearheading this initiative.
IDFA CEO Michael Dykes shared that this collaboration involves over 40 different ice cream companies, describing it as the largest effort of its kind in the industry. His comments came alongside praise from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who acknowledged food manufacturers committed to eliminating artificial colors.
Moreover, Kennedy remarked that the commitment includes about 35% of the U.S. food industry, indicating a growing trend toward healthier options. Dairy farmers participating in the initiative came from states like Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana, underscoring widespread support.
Amid this announcement, Indiana dairy farmer Sam Schwoeppe emphasized the benefits of whole milk. She reflected on her own experiences with nutrition, recalling how she had seen the impact of good nutrition in her family’s life, particularly for children.
She mentioned her brother’s transformation after embracing a healthier diet, highlighting the importance of nutritious food choices. “It’s vital to consume wholesome foods,” she said, adding that ice cream, although rich and calorie-laden, remains a cherished treat.
The dietary guidelines for 2020-2025 highlight that dairy products provide essential nutrients. The FDA also plans to approve a new natural food dye, Gardenia Blue, further enhancing the shift towards more natural ingredients.
As the Maha movement gains traction, local businesses like Stella’s homemade ice cream in South Carolina have already started eliminating artificial dyes, reflecting a community-wide commitment to healthier choices.
