Former Yonkers Officer Acquitted in Assault Case
A Westchester County jury acquitted a former Yonkers police officer on Monday, clearing him of charges related to a confrontation caught on video after a high-speed chase.
Hector Cartagena, who had served for 31 years on the Yonkers force, faced allegations of assault stemming from an incident on March 14 when he was terminated.
Police attorney Joe Takopina commented, saying, “Today’s complete acquittal of Sergeant Cartagena marks the end of a challenging path to justice. This case should never have reached this point.”
The incident was captured on police body camera, showing Cartagena apprehending a suspect, Trell Hook, following the chase initiated by a call about a stolen vehicle in the area.
In the footage, Cartagena, along with another officer, can be seen grappling with Hook, who continued to resist despite being stunned with a Taser.
Prosecutors claimed that Hook was struck at least ten times during the encounter, resulting in significant injuries. However, Takopina noted that Hook had endangered others by driving recklessly, reaching speeds up to 95 mph and hitting a pedestrian.
Westchester County District Attorney Susan Kakers expressed strong disagreement with the jury’s decision. “The body camera footage clearly illustrates the defendant’s actions,” she stated.
Takopina emphasized that Cartagena deserves acknowledgment for his long service. “For 31 years, he has represented our community with bravery and commitment. He is truly a hero,” he added.
