California Professor Arrested in ICE Raid Involving Allegations of Child Labor

Last week, a professor from California was taken into custody for reportedly throwing a tear gas canister during a confrontation with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent at a large cannabis farm. The operation has led to the arrest of over 350 undocumented individuals, and the farm is under investigation for potentially employing 14 children in forced labor, exploitation, and human trafficking activities.

Jonathan Anthony Caravelo, who teaches mathematics at California State University Channel Islands, was arrested by federal agents who conducted a raid on a greenhouse farm in Ventura County. This information was confirmed by a US attorney for the Central District of California.

According to a report from Ojai Valley News, a statement from the California Teachers Association (CFA) suggests that Caravelo’s arrest was politically motivated, characterizing the agents as “targeting” him.

Details of the Arrest

Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Essayli addressed Caravelo’s arrest, stating that he was taken into custody for intentionally assaulting a federal officer by throwing a tear gas canister.

Charged under 18 USC 111, Caravelo is accused of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a federal officer. He appeared in court on Monday and was released after posting a $15,000 bail. Following his release, the CFA shared a video of him leaving the courthouse with an ankle monitor visible.

In a statement, the CFA described Caravelo as a devoted educator who actively supported the student and immigrant community, declaring, “Their release sends a strong message. We are in this fight and will not stop until no one is criminalized for opposing injustice.”

Clashes During the Raid

Reports indicate that during the ICE operation, violent clashes erupted between federal agents and approximately 500 protesters, some waving Mexican flags. The situation escalated, with reports of agents being assaulted and at least one protester reportedly firing a handgun into the crowd as tear gas was deployed.

According to the federal affidavit mentioned in the Ojai Valley News, video footage captured Caravelo kicking a tear gas canister, picking it up, and throwing it at an ICE agent. The document asserts he resisted arrest and attempted to confuse officers using a megaphone.

University’s Response

The California State University Channel Islands has voiced support for Caravelo, emphasizing that peaceful protest is a protected right under the First Amendment. They have called for compassion and understanding while seeking clarity on his involvement in the protest.

The raid itself is believed to be one of the largest single-state immigration enforcement actions in history, second only to a significant operation during the Trump administration in 2019. It has resulted in the arrests of nearly 700 undocumented individuals, raising concerns about the treatment of vulnerable populations.

Authorities have reported a history of violent crimes among some of those apprehended, including cases of attempted exploitation. The children identified as victims are reportedly from Mexico and Honduras, and efforts are underway to assess the backgrounds of all the detainees.
