Coffee Enemas: A Trend with Risks

There’s a trend floating around on social media lately—it’s called “coffee enemas.” Yes, it seems that for some, morning coffee is evolving into something quite different.

According to Rosario Ligresti, who heads the gastroenterology department at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, an enema is a medical procedure that injects a solution into the lower colon. “The primary goal is to promote bowel movements,” he explains, adding that it can also serve medical or diagnostic purposes.

So, what exactly is a coffee enema? It’s often associated with alternative medicine, positing that certain compounds in coffee can detoxify the liver. This practice, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, is integral to a controversial cancer treatment known as “Gerson therapy.”

Interestingly, Ligresti mentioned a patient recently inquiring about coffee enemas. This procedure resembles a traditional enema, yet the liquid used is a mix of brewed coffee. This blend is held in the colon for about 10 to 15 minutes, allowing absorption of compounds through intestinal walls before being expelled.

Mona Sharma, a dietitian and wellness entrepreneur from Los Angeles, notes that while similar procedures have ancient roots in cultures like Egyptian, Greek, and Ayurvedic practices, the incorporation of coffee is a more modern twist. She says some clients report feeling energized after the treatment; however, she cautions that these effects are anecdotal and lack clinical backing.

Ligresti emphasizes there are no scientifically validated health benefits from such practices. “The thought that enemas can detoxify the body is a common misconception,” he states. He asserts that our liver and kidneys already function as the body’s detox system, naturally maintaining our health.

Sharma agrees, advocating for the body’s built-in healing abilities through proper nutrition. She recommends a diet rich in greens and bitter herbs instead of relying on unconventional detox methods.

Potential Risks

However, coffee enemas carry their own risks. Ligresti warns that using hot coffee can lead to burns or infections in sensitive regions of the body. There’s even a potential for caffeine overdose if too much is absorbed.

While some might experience temporary benefits, Sharma considers the procedure risky. “Based on current medical knowledge and the prevailing advice from health organizations, individuals are better off avoiding coffee enemas altogether,” she advises.

Experts agree that only traditional enemas, using medically approved solutions, are considered safe for constipation relief or bowel preparatory procedures, and these should always be done under medical supervision.

If anyone still wishes to try this treatment, Sharma suggests doing it only under the guidance of a skilled professional capable of addressing any adverse effects or complications.
