Knife Attack on Bronx Train
A man wielding a knife attacked a stranger on a Bronx train during the busy morning commute, according to reports from law enforcement and other sources.
The incident occurred around 9:10 a.m. on a northbound No. 2 train as it was passing the 225th Street station in Williamsbridge. The victim, who is 27 years old, suffered a slash to the face from the blade, as per police information.
After the attack, the victim was transported to Montefiore Medical Center, where his condition was reported as stable.
Details surrounding the motive for the assault remain unclear. It appears the attacker and the victim were strangers to each other, according to police sources.
The assailant was last seen wearing dark clothing, specifically a black hoodie and navy sweatpants, and managed to flee the scene before being apprehended.
This incident comes just days after the NYPD disclosed a slight uptick in transit crimes through September compared to the previous year.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted there were 15 more reported crimes this year as opposed to the same period last year, marking a 0.9 percent increase. She explained that despite this, major crime rates in the New York City subway system remain among the lowest in the last 15 years, if we disregard the periods affected by the pandemic.
Commissioner Tisch highlighted that the relatively small increase in major crime within transit primarily involves felony assaults, which have risen by 11 percent this year, largely driven by attacks on public sector workers.
She also mentioned that nearly half of the felony assaults in the subway this year were committed by individuals with a known history of mental health issues documented by the NYPD, and that repeat offenders contribute significantly to these statistics.
