Changes in H-1B Visa Program Prompt Reactions in Texas
With the ongoing discussions surrounding modifications to the H-1B visa program, residents in Texas are keen to hear their leaders’ thoughts. However, the reactions so far seem to surprise many, particularly in a state known for its conservative stance.
During a Diwali celebration, Texas Governor Greg Abbott shared a message addressing the “Indian community.” He stated, “As long as I am governor of this great state, Texas will be a land for Indian communities,” which has since garnered attention.
In a video clip viewed widely, Abbott continued, “We continue to celebrate Diwali here in the great state of Texas. Happy Diwali, everyone!” This footage, which surfaced online, is reported to have come from a TikTok video recorded shortly after the festivities in November.
Diwali, a prominent Hindu holiday symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, is celebrated during specific lunar months and is highlighted by the “row of lights,” which is traditional for this occasion.
Abbott’s office has downplayed any direct involvement with the H-1B visa program, emphasizing that it is managed at the federal level. They have also noted the governor’s decision to halt the issuance of H-1B visas in state-sponsored departments.
Interestingly, data reveals that Texas has seen a significant number of H-1B visa applications, ranking second only to California in recent filings. Specifically, over 11,200 applications were sponsored and approved by Texas businesses in the first quarter of fiscal 2026.
When asked for further comments, Abbott’s office mentioned that he has hosted various receptions, including those for Christian and Jewish holidays, to reflect inclusivity. They suggest that these events are not unusual for a governor’s office.
