California Senators Oppose Homeland Security Funding Amid Controversy

Senator Adam Schiff from California has stated he is ready to reject any new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), even if it results in another government shutdown. His stance follows the tragic murder of Minnesota nurse Alex Preti by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I won’t support funding for ICE or Border Patrol,” Schiff declared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this past Sunday.

He added that any lawmaker who votes for increased funding would share in the blame for further tragedies occurring in American cities.

Another California senator, Alex Padilla—also a Democrat—echoed Schiff’s sentiments, voicing his opposition to the funding measure. He criticized immigration officials for acting “with such reckless disregard for life, safety, and the Constitution,” referring to recent events.

As the January 30 deadline approaches to prevent a partial government shutdown, both senators are among those expressing their discontent with new immigration enforcement funding, particularly in light of the recent violence in Minneapolis.

Last week, the House of Representatives narrowly approved a DHS funding bill, which includes a $10 billion allocation for ICE as part of a broader $1.2 trillion package aimed at keeping the government operational.

However, Senate Democrats have taken a hard stance against any new funding for immigration agents, especially after the outrage provoked by Preti’s killing during a protest. This stance raises the likelihood of another government shutdown.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer referred to the events in Minnesota as “horrifying,” emphasizing that Democrats would not vote in favor of a spending bill if it contained additional DHS funding.

Preti’s shooting occurred in the context of an anti-ICE protest linked to the Trump administration’s extensive Operation Metro Surge initiative.

Federal officials claimed that the officers were acting in self-defense after Preti allegedly “violently resisted” them, a claim cast into doubt by video evidence from bystanders.

In response to the unrest, a coalition of Minnesota’s leading businesses and sports teams issued an open letter calling for an immediate de-escalation and advocating for “real solutions” to address the tensions.

While President Trump indicated that the government was examining the shooting incident, he has not commented on whether the actions taken by the federal officer in question were inappropriate.

Notably, during Trump’s first term, there was a partial government shutdown lasting 35 days due to disputes over funding for a border wall.
