White House to Use Tariff Revenue for Food Aid During Shutdown

The White House plans to utilize tariff revenue to sustain the food aid program as a government shutdown threatens to cut funding. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is projected to run out of funding just two weeks into the shutdown, prompting this action. While lawmakers seem hesitant to act swiftly, the administration aims to ensure support for vulnerable populations in the meantime.

In 2024, the government is set to provide assistance, including vouchers for nutritious groceries and access to healthcare and social services, aiding around seven million low-income women and children. Recently, the Office of Management and Budget discovered a “creative solution” to allocate tariff revenue to the WIC program. However, the White House has not disclosed the specific amount that will be redirected. According to Axios, food aid programs saw expenditures exceeding $7 billion last year.

Concerns regarding the WIC program’s stability during the shutdown have been echoed by lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. They highlighted the significant risk the shutdown poses not only to WIC recipients but also to active-duty military families facing food insecurity.

If the shutdown continues, military families might not receive their paychecks until October 15. Additionally, food pantries at military installations, such as Fort Hood in Texas, are experiencing rising demand as families deal with increased financial strain.

“It’s American families who are suffering,” Thune remarked. “Funding for WIC is set to run out. Right now, young soldiers are deployed globally, leaving their families at home relying on these funds.” He stressed the importance of addressing these issues promptly to support those in need.
