Alabama Coach Faces Sex Crime Charges

A high school basketball coach in Alabama has been charged with sexual offenses involving a student. Paige Adams, 35, allegedly asked the victim to send “obscene materials depicting sexual acts” just days before her resignation as head coach of a championship team.

Court documents indicate that Adams made at least two inappropriate requests on March 16. Shortly after, she stepped down from her role with the Cold Springs High School girls basketball team.

In addition to the immediate allegations, she is accused of having sent similar explicit materials on at least 28 occasions between February 13 and March 9 to students under the age of 19.

Adams is set to appear in court on May 22, having been charged with over 30 sex crimes, which could potentially lead to a prison sentence of up to 31 years.

The specific charges include “sexual or deviant sexual intercourse with a student,” sexual contact with students under 19, and distributing obscene material. Her coaching tenure was brief; she led the Cold Springs Eagles to a state championship in her only year before resigning on March 25.

Although her team finished the season with a respectable 23-11 record, they lost in the finals. Interestingly, Adams is also a former student of Cold Springs, noted for winning back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009.

Her resignation followed charges against the district’s superintendent, Shane Barnett. He stated that this was the first formal complaint he had received regarding Adams.

The investigation into the situation began as soon as concerns were raised. Adams was escorted from the school premises, with Barnett confirming that her departure was without any confrontation.

Reports suggest that Adams was aware of the investigation. Adding to the complexity of the situation, her husband of 15 years, Drew—also involved in the school’s basketball program—filed for divorce shortly after, seeking full custody of their son, Parker.
