American Airlines increases AI use to assist with flight delays for passenger connections

Ideas to Enhance Your Airport Experience

On a recent episode of “Fox News Saturday Night,” hosts Ryan Reese, Madison Alworth, and Jenny Failla covered a new initiative introduced by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, aimed at improving the flying experience for Americans.

American Airlines is currently experimenting with an AI-driven system that aims to minimize delays for passengers catching connecting flights. The testing phase will commence at Dallas-Fort Worth in May 2025 and, interestingly, it’s already been rolled out to other major airports like Los Angeles, Charlotte, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Phoenix.

This technology has the potential to lead to fewer missed connections for travelers. By analyzing real-time data, it identifies flights with passengers likely to miss their next departure and determines if those flights can temporarily pause to assist those travelers.

According to Luisa Barrientos Flores from American Airlines, when a flight is delayed in this manner, passengers will receive automated texts with details about how long their flight will wait at the gate. Typically, this pause is around ten minutes.

Some travelers have shared their experiences with this system on platforms like Reddit. One passenger recounted receiving a notification about his connecting flight after a delay, which said the flight would remain at the gate. He felt a wave of relief, as it was a crucial connection—especially since it was the last flight of the evening.

Text notifications have proven valuable as well; travelers said they received them right after their plane landed, indicating how long their connection would be held. Meanwhile, United Airlines has also introduced features to better help passengers with connections. Their approach builds on existing technology, offering personalized step-by-step directions to gates, estimated walking times, and real-time flight updates, which should ease some of the stress of navigating airports.

This new tech from United aims to help keep passengers informed, and it even offers alerts when departure flights can be reserved for travelers facing tight transitions.

Fox News Digital has sought additional comments from American Airlines about this initiative.
