American forces in the Middle East are at risk of attacks while Trump considers options against Iran.

The United States military presence in the Middle East is bracing for potential escalations, particularly if the U.S. chooses to involve itself in the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran. White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt indicated on Thursday that President Trump is expected to make a decision regarding possible strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities within two weeks.

“Yes, I might do that. I might not,” Trump noted during a statement on Wednesday. He added that no one truly knows his plans, but he mentioned that Iran is dealing with numerous issues and expressed a desire to negotiate.

On the other side, Iran has sent a stark warning. If the U.S. engages in conflict, it could face severe consequences, reminiscent of past retaliatory actions after the U.S. killed a prominent Iranian general in 2020. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei remarked, “Americans should know that US military intervention will undoubtedly involve irreparable damage.”

In response to rising tensions, the Pentagon has bolstered its forces in the region, dispatching the aircraft carrier Nimitz from the South China Sea to join the Carl Vinson, already stationed in the Middle East.

Defense officials, including DoD spokesman Sean Parnell, have asserted that U.S. military remains in a “defensive stance.” Monday’s announcements indicated that protecting U.S. forces is the top priority and that recent deployments are aimed at enhancing this defensive posture.

Senator Richard Blumenthal questioned defense officials about the contingency plans for drone threats, especially after a drone attack in Jordan earlier this year that resulted in casualties among U.S. service members.

Currently, over 40,000 U.S. troops, along with Department of Defense civilians, are stationed in various countries throughout the Middle East, many of which could see heightened risks based on these developments.

Iraq

As of September 2024, approximately 2,500 U.S. troops are deployed in Iraq, participating in a joint task force aimed at combatting ISIS. Following a U.S. airstrike that killed General Qasem Soleimani, there were retaliatory attacks against bases housing U.S. personnel.

Jordan

In Jordan, around 350 troops are based at a remote site known as Tower 22, where a drone attack in January 2024 inflicted casualties on U.S. soldiers, leading to awards for those injured.

Kuwait

In Kuwait, the U.S. operates five bases with around 13,500 troops, primarily focused on countering ISIS threats.

Qatar

Qatar houses the U.S. Central Command’s front headquarters at Al Udeid Air Base, which includes a diverse array of aviation assets and capabilities.

Bahrain

Bahrain is home to the Navy Central Command, leading efforts to combat terrorism and ensure maritime security since its establishment there in 1971.

United Arab Emirates

Near Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra Air Force Base serves as a base for drone operations, featuring advanced unmanned aircraft capabilities.
