Gallup Survey: American Trust in Media at Record Low
A recent Gallup survey has revealed that trust in the media among Americans has plummeted to an unprecedented low. As of the latest findings, nearly 70% of individuals surveyed express a lack of confidence in media outlets.
This decline in trust may be linked to various controversies, such as the assassination of Charlie Kirk and reports surrounding violence in Ukraine. The survey indicates that only 28% of Americans report “very” high confidence in their newspapers, television, and radio. In stark contrast, 34% claim to trust these sources not at all, while 36% describe their trust as minimal.
The divide in confidence becomes even more pronounced along party lines. Trust among Republicans has dropped to just 8%, marking the first time it has fallen to single digits. Conversely, 51% of Democrats express significant trust in the media, while only 9% report a lack of confidence. Among Independents, the numbers are mixed, with 27% declaring trust and 32% saying they have none at all.
There also appears to be a generational gap when it comes to media trust. Recent data shows that 43% of those aged 65 or older have faith in media outlets, compared to less than 28% of younger demographics.
Since Gallup began its tracking in 1972, confidence in the media overall has consistently declined. Back then, 68% of Americans expressed substantial trust, while a mere 6% indicated they had no faith in the media.
Additionally, recent studies reveal that major media organizations have been hesitant to label left-wing violent actions compared to right-wing incidents. During a six-month period, terms indicating left-wing extremism were used 1,222 times, whereas descriptors for “right” or similar terms were mentioned only 86 times.
Moreover, the media’s coverage has also faced criticism for overlooking significant incidents, such as the stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee, Irina Zaltzka, in North Carolina, as well as downplaying anti-fascist messages discovered near the site of Kirk’s assassination.
In related news, Paramount recently settled a lawsuit with Donald Trump for $36 million over allegations that CBS mismanaged a critical interview with Kamala Harris just before the 2024 elections. Furthermore, Skydance Media is expected to finalize an $8 billion acquisition of Paramount, promising to promote equitable journalism and diverse perspectives on television.
This Gallup poll was conducted between September 2 and 16, involving a random sample of 1,000 adults from across the United States.
