Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that American women don’t trust former President Donald Trump to sign a nationwide abortion ban if elected in November.
A partial transcript follows:
Kristen Welker: First, I want to get your reaction to what we just heard from Senator J.D. Vance, who said that if a bill banning abortion at the federal level reached Donald Trump’s desk, he would veto it if he was elected. Senator, what is your take on that?
WARREN: American women are not stupid. We are not going to entrust the future of our daughters and granddaughters to two men who openly brag about making abortion unavailable to women across this country. Now, if Donald Trump and J.D. Vance were to occupy the White House, they have the law we have, the Comstock Act, and they can make abortion unavailable to women across this country (by putting the right people in the Justice Department and putting radical judges on the road). And when I say “make abortion unavailable,” I don’t mean exceptions for rape, incest, and the 16-week ban, I mean banning abortion for all women whenever they need it. Because when the pills are taken off the market, when the procedures are taken off the market, they don’t exist.
So any woman in the midst of a miscarriage, going to the emergency room only to find out there is no medicine or treatment available because of a national ban on abortion, can thank Donald Trump and J.D. Vance.
WELKER: And then Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have both been asked about the Comstock Act, which, as you say, could potentially ban the distribution of pharmaceuticals, and again, they both say, “We’re not going to use it to ban abortion.” You don’t seem to believe that.
WARREN: Don’t believe me? Just read it. J.D. Vance actually wrote a letter to the Department of Justice last year saying, “Enforce the Comstock Act.” And remember, after he did that, Donald Trump picked him as vice president. Look at Project 2025. It lays out the roadmap for doing exactly this. And frankly, it’s not hard to accomplish if you have the chops in the Department of Justice and the judiciary. Vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has said, “We don’t write a playbook unless we have a plan to use it.” Already, the plan is in place. And understand this. Right now, 30% of women live in states that effectively ban abortion. With Donald Trump and J.D. Vance in the White House, it won’t be 30%, it’ll be 100%. The only way we’re going to protect access to abortion is for a Democratic Congress to send a bill to Kamala Harris. She’ll sign the bill into law. And that will restore abortion rights to half of the population of this country. That way, women won’t go to the emergency room and be told they’re too close to death to get the medical care they need.
